Creating What Was Missing
Growing up in a world where I could not find people like me created one of the biggest wounds I carry—one that I am still recovering from today. The isolation, fear, and shame I experienced impacted every aspect of my life. Yet, over time, I have come to understand that those same experiences also gave me incredible survival skills. Being “gay” ultimately became my superpower.
The Date
Art has taught me a great deal about the world, and combining that knowledge with my superpower makes my work even stronger. Through painting and writing from the perspective of my “gay” self, I have come to understand the importance of positive representation. I create to give myself and others what was missing for me growing up. I create worlds where people like me can be seen, understood, and represented. Through that visibility comes healing.
To me, art is one of the greatest forms of therapy. It can help us discover who we are, confront what has shaped us, and find a sense of belonging.
My painting, The Date, was inspired by a vintage photograph I found online. I was immediately drawn to the closeness between the two young men—not simply their physical proximity, but the intimate sweetness and comfort they share. There is an ease between them that requires no words. Their expressed connection is obvious.
I use encaustic wax, both for its rich colors and its texture. The layered colored wax creates a vintage feeling within my paintings, reinforcing the sense that these moments could have existed decades ago. At the same time, the emotions brought forth from the storytelling aspect makes the art feel relevant today.
I believe it is important for my art to have meaning and a message. I don't paint simply for the sake of painting; there is always a story behind what I create. As an artist, I am able to set the stage and create a world for the viewer to enter. What the viewer takes away from that world, however, is their own story and their own journey.
I paint what was missing for me. I paint so that others can see themselves. And I paint because being seen can be the beginning of healing.
